Music is Everything, Everywhere

music personal story random thoughts Dec 14, 2021

I'm at this coffee shop which has a vibe of minimalism, cleanliness and hosts a variety of high carb treats. North America revolves around the carb, man. Maybe Starbucks got it right with the egg bites, like, finally something other than a bagel, croissant, muffin or scone. The only thing Starbucks got wrong is the coffee, but that's for another post 😛

So this coffee shop is aesthetically pleasing with decent coffee and tea selection and fresh painted walls. This could be a place where people gather, converse, share memories and dreams of the future in moments of pure contentment. But they can't!! Why?

Well, because this place is playing Top 40, high energy, anxiety inducing music you would hear at a Goodlife Fitness while the guy grunts beside you while sweating out whey protein smelling like sour milk.

Music is Everything in a Coffee Shop

Music is obviously subjective but in an environment where people converse, the objective of music shouldn't be to speed up and induce a feeling of being "rushed."

"Hey Google, play low fi coffee shop jazz on Spotify"

Such a simple solution to this coffee shop increasing its customer base but at least 20%. K I have no idea if that would happen but at least I would enjoy it more, but I swear other people would too! What people actually want and what people think they actually want are two different things.

Music is Everything at a Wedding

Have you been to wedding where the couple really just fucked up the playlist? The music makes or breaks a wedding, man! Weddings bring people together from the bride and grooms past, especially those that really don't want to be there but you know. . .they went to college with the guy.

In that case, the music needs to mirror the past where connections were first made and nostalgia and familiarity can fill the dance floor with a delicious fume called "this was worth the $150 bucks."

Just quickly about weddings for a sec. I guess I'm always surprised when women take the mans last name so quickly without much consideration. If I was a woman I'd want to keep my last name, combine them, or definitely have a hard think about it with some pros and cons. Where's the feminism in this idea of a mans ownership over a woman in matrimony?

Anyways, wedding music is obviously huge on the dance floor but the emotion it creates as the bride walks down an isle is huge!

Music is Everything in Calmness

I think we forget the importance of ambience and the role music has in all of our lives. Do you think people were genuinely happier before the age of heavy metal, hip hop, punk or even rock and roll? Honestly, I'm a huge fan of heavy metal and that's all I play on guitar. But think about growing up and only hearing Big Bang music and the genres in the 1930s - 1950s.

Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, The Mills Brothers, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, The Ink Spots

The music in that era is seemingly simple. The songs don't have 64 layered tracks and lyrics you really need to sit down and think deeply about. I Just can't help but feel a sense of complete calm, like everything is going to be okay when I listen to the oldies. I wonder if people felt that back then. I think it's time to call grandma and grandpa and ask them.

Does music play an important role in your life? Does it influence mood and take you to different places in fantasy? Have you ever been to an environment that was beautiful until Lil' Nas came on?

Well, if the answer is yes, maybe we're more alike than different after all 😀

Thanks for Reading

Scott
